My Background

I received my Bachelor of Science degree (major in Psychology, minor in Criminology) from the University of Toronto in 1990.  I received the Master of Education degree (Counselling Psychology) from the University of Alberta in 1998 and was Registered as a Psychologist in the province of Alberta in 2000.  From 1990 through 2000 I worked in several positions that mainly involved assisting adults and adolescents with sexual offending behaviours, as well as with survivors of sexual, physical and emotional abuse.   I also worked as an educational consultant, completing assessments and consulting in schools providing support to teachers, students, and parents.

As a Registered Psychologist in private practice, my focus has shifted somewhat: I continue to work with survivors of childhood abuse, as well as with people who have addictive or problematic sexual behaviours.  However, I no longer work with people who are sexually aggressive.  Since 1995 I have also completed many assessments on children and adults in the school system, focused on learning difficulties, behavioural disorders, and emotional functioning.

I enjoy professional presentations and have led workshops on learning disabilities, ADHD, personality disorders, behavioural management within the classroom, and sexual development in children. I have also been a Sessional Lecturer at Concordia University College of Alberta, where I taught courses in Introductory Group Therapy, Human Sexual Behaviour, Introductory Psychology, Ethics, and Introduction to Personality.

My Practice

Generally clients call to see a psychologist when they are in a crisis.  My preference is to see clients on a fairly frequent basis (usually weekly) for the first little while, and then the client and I decide what is needed from there.  Some people process things more quickly, while others take longer.  Some have more to deal with.  In general, you are better to see a psychologist sooner rather than later - the longer the problems go on, the more habitual negative thinking and behavioural patterns become, and the longer they take to change.  Some clients have 2 or 3 sessions and learn a great deal in a short period of time - others have much more to process and can take several years.

Payment: My rates are in line with the fees recommended by the Psychologists' Association of Alberta. I do not offer a sliding fee scale. Yes, a psychologist is expensive, but when you put it in the context of hairdressers, lawyers, and mechanics, it's actually not too bad. On the other hand, spending the time and money to deal with personal problems can lead to more efficient work (and potentially more income, depending on your type of work), better relationships, improved immune system functioning, and overall better satisfaction in life. I do not do direct billing except in very rare cases (such as for Veteran's Affairs). If you have some insurance coverage, you will have to pay me and then submit the receipt for reimbursement. I do, however, have an account with QuikCard. Payments can be made by cash, cheque, Mastercard, Visa, or Interac.

Cancellation: If you book a time and you do not show, you will be charged the full rate for it. I require at least 24 hours notice of a cancellation of a counselling session, and 48 hours for an assessment session.

Philosophy: As a client of a psychologist, you are a consumer and it is my goal to provide the best service possible. You are paying me for my expertise and experience, but you are the expert in you. To me, psychological therapy is a collaborative exercise: if you do not play your part, then therapy will not be successful. My role is to facilitate your deeper understanding of your difficulties and help you to find ways to resolve them. If you have a problem with my service, I want to know so that I can try to resolve it. If you are happy with my service, please let me know that too.
